Shape-enhanced fusion

This forum is for other possible methods for fusion such as Sonolumenescense, Cold Fusion, CANR/LENR or accelerator fusion. It should contain all theory, discussions and even construction and URLs related to "other than fusor, fusion".

Shape-enhanced fusion

Post by RobertMendelsohn »

Link to the paper: https://doi.org/10.1016/S0375-9601(97)00756-1

Abstract: "We show that an order of magnitude enhancement of the fusion cross section is possible for some advanced fusion fuels involving deformed nuclei providing the reacting nuclei fuse in a directed orientation. This process is a manifestation of Coulomb barrier reduction and we identify some candidate advanced fusion fuels which could exploit this phenomenon..."

Fascinating paper - I for one did not know that nuclei can be non-spherical, or that this feature can be exploited to alter the Coulomb barrier. What do you think about this from a theoretical or practical approach? People have indeed built polarized beams of this type (quite similar to beam-on-target efforts). Anyone care to discuss?

Sincerely,

Robert

Non-spherical nuclei are well known. As for fusion it might have an effect in stellar cores for modeling stellar evolution and metallic production in said cores but for human based net energy fusion - not useful at all. We can only use the lightness nuclei (D & T). Heavier atomic nuclei for energy generation is far beyond any existing approch; hence, their use of the term "Advanced Fuels" is rather pointless (assuming that can be done at all, really.) :)

Dear Mr. Mendelsohn

You might find this recent article concerning the internal shape of the [hard to imagine how smal]l nucleus of Carbon 12 modeled in a super computer simulation interesting

The concept of an alpha particle nucleus model is very old and a number of modeling attempts have been made in the past. Now they are looking at complex mathematical models of the lighter elements. The idea came about long ago when it was found that no natural radioactive element emits neutrons. But Alphas are commonly emitted by the heaviest of natural elements and their daughter decay products. The thought of an alpha assembled nucleus seemed logical as it is the only exit path for neutrons and protons from the nucleus, bound in the helium/alpha nucleus.

Fusion is the energy of the future....and it always will be
The more complex the idea put forward by the poor amateur, the more likely it will never see embodiment
