Songs.com was sold in late 1999 to an entertainment and hospitably conglomerate in Nashville, Gaylord Entertainment, and became part of Gaylord Digital.

Within a year, the Young Turks Gaylord had hired to run their digital operations had run the whole thing into the ground, and songs.com disappeared from the Internet. A little bit of that history is still online here:

At that time a new service was established to continue the dialog that started under the umbrella of songs.com; That was the first iteration of "The Open Source Fusor Research Consortium" that eventually became fusor.net, which itself has gone through several platforms and hosts, but has operated more or less continuously since ~1998.
