Hi

I would hate to have to pay for the oil in that big one.

Re: Diffusion pumps
Thanks for sharing. My only diffusion pump is tiny, never used here, and lost under workbench.
They do come bigger. That's a 48-inch 100,000 l/s unit at http://www.ivicorp.com/diffusion-pumps/
Anybody know the pump specs at world-class vacuum test chambers?

Hi Russell
The largest is a Edwards Diffstak 160/700, 760 L/s (for N).
From a GC-MS of the 70's.

Re: Diffusion pumps
The prices of used diff pumps on Ebay have gone sky-high. I was lucky to get while the getting was good a few years back. I have an Agilent AX-65 (needs a heater assy), a CVC 3" water-cooled pump, and a VBC setup putting together a small CVC air cooled diff pump with a Welch 1400 backing pump.

Re: Diffusion pumps
I have an Edwards 160/700 as well, grabbed for free but uses tons of oil and power. Even clocked back to 110v from 240v cooling has been an issue, on the good side though it pumps down pretty quickly.
I love how simple these things are inside:

Re: Diffusion pumps
The concepts behind their operation are pretty simple and basic, too. I wonder who came up with the first diff pump?
I just looked it up - the diff pump was invented all the way back in 1915...

I also forgot that I have a smalish air-cooled Edwards diff pump floating around in my stuff.

Re: Diffusion pumps
I diff pumped fusor IV 2004-2017. I loved the diff pump until I bought a complete working Turbo system at HEAS in 2016 for $250 from Bill Connery.
That old diff pump in packed away just itchin' for the demise of the turbo system and its immediate reinstatement as lord of the secondary pumping system in my fusion setup. I go with what works as long as it works. Diff pump systems never die and are bullet proof in the hands of a person who understands them.
