A second visit to Justin Fozzard

Post by Luca Aldridge »

Now that I’m on summer holidays, I went down to another member of this forum to pick up some parts and here they are:

A Vacuum trolley. This has an Edwards E2M2 rotary vane pump and a diff pump. It also has a liquid nitrogen baffle which I’ll be removing. The control panel allows me to see the vacuum and operate the pumps from ome place. the frame is flimsy so I’ll be making my own in due course which will house everything on one rack with castors.

I have two foreline valves which I’ve cleaned and will re-oil and assemble once I find the oil for it.

I’ve started to take the rotary pump apart to service and clean - it’s very dirty.

Here’s a spare diffpump incase I find I need it.

My 25kV transforer takes a 30V primary so I got a 0-240V variac and a 240V-30V transformer. Once I make the box for this it’ll have almost everything I need - just the rectifiers etc after that.

Any questions, and I’ll answer them!

Once I start constructing the fusor I’ll make a thread in images du jour.

Looks like there is a manual butterfly gate valve in stalled. Personally, I wouldn't call that stand "flimsy" but to each their own ;). The DP looks air cooled, nice. The LN2 baffle still is useful even w/o LN2 to help reduce oil vapor back streaming.

Dennis,
Yes - that is manual (Edwards Speedivac QSB2 valve)
The stand isn’t objectively flimsy but is wobbly, and I’m going to weld up a proper frame to make sure it’s rock solid.
The DP is air cooled yes - oil is on the way for it.
Although I’m sure it is useful I won’t be using it as the fitting sizes won’t work for what I’m doing. Regardless, what would I fill it with, if anything?

The baffle itself is a good anti-back streaming device and need not be cooled other then it just sitting there. However, if I had one for my DP I'd simply build a closed cycle refrigerator system, using propane as the fluid, and get -40 C on it. But certainly, mating to your chamber is the primary issue.

Wondering - if the 25 kV x-former requires just 30 volts, why use a 240 volt variac? Why not a normal 120 v unit?

Hi again Dennis,
Okay makes sense - perhaps Ill look into it when I look at upgrading my fusor.

So, it takes 30v. I also have a 240>30v transformer, and a 240 volt variac, so i can go from 0-240V, ie 0-30V, ie 0-25kV.
i live in the UK so 240V is the standard here.

Looks like a good haul there, I think I need to arrange a visit soon as well.

I see your variac also looks like it follows, what seems to be the UK standard and has 0-275V on the output, i.e. uneven primary and secondary. Which would ultimately give you slightly more than the 30v at full beans.

Emma,
Yes - you’re right. At the moment I’m still at demo fusor stage and so won’t go near that yet haha
