Using diffusion pump oil in a mechanical pump

Every fusor and fusion system seems to need a vacuum. This area is for detailed discussion of vacuum systems, materials, gauging, etc. related to fusor or fusion research.

Using diffusion pump oil in a mechanical pump

Post by chucrut »

Hello,
I'm using a cheap oil for my mechanical pump and I have heavy outgassing and contamination from the pump.
In my country is difficult to get a decent quality oil for mechanical pump.
Do you think is a good idea to use diffusion pump oil in a mechanical pump?
Many thanks!

Diffusion pump oil is about 30 times more expensive than good proper mechanical pump oil. Do you own a gallon of diffusion pump oil?

Hi Richard,
I have diffusion pump oil here at hand. Is expensive, but is already here so I can try.
Do you think using this oil could help outgassing and contamination from mechanical pump?

Many thanks,

Why do you start your long pursuit trying to use a wrong road?
Mechanical pump oil has several properties, not only oriented to get a good vacuum but also to protect the steel parts inside the pump.
Were are you based? Surely some provider of consumables for vacuum systems, as mass spectrometers, can sell you some quantity. Check someone in the University.
Sell or trade your diff oil!

Hi,
I will try to use a filter between the mechanical pump and diffusion pump to reduce oil contamination.
There are different types of filters for mechanical pumps. Copper wool, zeolite filter, fiberglass filter, etc.
I need to evaluate which one is easier to make here. DIY approach

Many thanks!
