I made a demo fusor back in 2011 but never achieved fusion from some college of transferring schools and lack of funding. Now I have more knowledge and some disposable income to complete the project. I also have slowly accumulated equipment and knowledge over those years that will help complete the project (D2 cylinder, radiation equipment, etc).
You can see some (possibly out of date) notes on what I've been up to here: http://siliconpr0n.org/wiki/doku.php?id=mcmaster:fusor
In particular I've had a heck of a time getting neutron counters working to prove that I actually have fusion. I'll do a separate post in the near future.
For my day job I work on commercial satellites. As part of that I do occasional radiation testing (protons @ UC Davis) but didn't know much about how it worked. This is part of a series of projects to learn about nuclear technology including theoretical and practical elements (ex: how neutron detectors work).
I see Richard Feldman trolls this area...I'll preemptively say hi to you. I see a few other bay area people posted recently and I'll reach out to see if we can have a get together or something.
My most involved nuclear project so far has been playing with gamma spectroscopy. This started as learning about how a SEM EDS system works. Info here: http://siliconpr0n.org/wiki/doku.php?id ... gamma_spec

you can also find some nuclear themed projects on my twitter feed: https://twitter.com/johndmcmaster
