This is with D2 and only 1KV. The sphere is hand formed .010 Ta wire
1.3" dia. A 25 mm lense feeds the fiber optic cable to the Ocean Optics
spectrometer.
I expect my 30KV power supply to be repaired this week.

Congrats, Wayne. I have always been intrigued by how the bugle jet appears to materialize "out of nothingness". An "event horizon" as it were.

Congrats, Wayne. That's a beautiful picture with great resolution; did you just take a regular digital camera and snap a photo through the viewport?

I used a 8 Meg camera with a macro setting through the 25mm sapphire
window. The 19" display monitor gives a poor quality image.
We can operate this Saturday.

At lower pressure the center becomes faint and a green jet appears.
Guess it is the electron path. Next time, I will use the RGA. Getting ready
for more power.

Very nice. Hope you post pix when your PS is fixed. BTW I have seen several Ocean Optics spectrometers on e-bay but most of them were really expensive. I ended up getting a SPEX spectro (old style and big but with computer controls) Any tips on getting a good deal with these integrated units like the one you have?

Thanks- The Ocean optics is easy, but a good SPEX with a PMT will give
scientific measurements. I have a 1.25 meter SPEX which I plan to use
fore future measurements. This resolves 80 mili angstroms.
OE makes a "student spec for $1200.
Your SPEX with a fiber optic is a good plan.

Nice work!
The time that Tom Ligon and I spent with EMC square's ocean optics spectro looking at doppler broadening was most instructional. We had his unit spec'd with a special slit and grating to focus in on the H beta line. That is the small peak in your image to the left of the large H alpha line.

It should work, over 2 angstroms difference in the balmer line.
It just occured to me with such equipment it would be fairly easy to try isotopic enrichement of water, and then determine how successful by a discharge in the hydrogen.
A little off topic, but I thought it might be a cool experiment.

Beautiful picture, and I have often wondered what the spectrum looks like. Do you have enough resolution to measure the Dopler broadening and get an estimate of temperature?

We used an Ocean Optics spectrometer at EMC2 as well. I was hoping to measure Doppler broadening of the H beta peak with it. Never did get definitive results. Ions emit light when they recombine, and I think the high energy ions that would make the broadening don't recombine much.
Let me know if you ever detect broadening, and how you gathered enough light to do it.
