New NEC Accelerator @ work
We are presently installing a brand new 0.5MeV Tandem accelerator @ work in a very small space.
Few Factoids
Analysing magent 7 tonnes
Will be used for C14, Al, and Be dating work
Insulated with SF6 @80psi
Terminal to ground about 1 foot (three rings each end of terminal)
I will add pics of the other bits when they get installed including the very cute electrostatic analyser

Re: New NEC Accelerator @ work
Eye candy indeed! Thanks for that. Of course it looks like a CRT, because it does the same job, create and focus a beam of charged particles. Some constants for that are a little different due to differing e/m ratios, but all the ideas are the same. And yes, I'm sure that like a yacht, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it. It's a hole in the water you attempt to fill with cash! At that, I suspect that the salaries (or actually the net cost of the people to the outfit, which is far higher in my experience) is even larger in a pretty short time period. Nice stack of pumps too!
Why guess when you can know? Measure!

I saw one of those on ebay recently. "Tandem accelerator, with bending magnets - buyer collects. Unused stock. Archaeology dating, etc..". It went for $250.

Re: New NEC Accelerator @ work
Very Nice!!!
Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures, much appreciated. Its nice to be able to see state of the art technology in visual form. Is the charging system a pelletron chain? For this voltage level another method like a VM, or HF capacitive system would be more easy which now has me doubting my pelletron chain theory. Does it use a gas stripper canal, or carbon foil?
Boy this thing has a serious bank of heat exchangers at one end, so something in it must be making a lot of heat. You could almost buy a house with the vacuum pump assortment in the first picture, it must be like Christmas to be able to use new equipment like this, I can even imagine the new equipment smell, just like a new car.
Thanks.....

Yes its pelletron
yes it uses a gas stripper two turbos back to back differentially pumping the gas canal
more pics soon

Just kidding, John... just my sarcastic Brit wit [or lack, thereof].
Lovely bit of kit. We look forward to seeing it ticking. What's the bending B field strength that yoke can get up to?

John,
Truly a beautiful thing. Did you say what it's going to be used for and I missed it?

Doug
exclusively used for C,Be,Al dating
so for carbon dating it does the ratios of C12, C13, C14, for Be it is ratio of Be10 to Be11.
By using these for dating depending on age dictates what out of C,Be,Al is used.
Labs elsewhere on site seperate the uranium series by wet chemistry and yet other labs do Tritium dating and yet others do the other stable isotopes by Mass spec.

Ah, totally cool, I'd heard of that usage. Glad to see someone is doing it right!
