Hi,
I should like to show my homemade mca based on a PIC 16F84 processor. I have tested it with a also homemade semiconductor counter. The counter is made by removing the window of a simple BPX 61 photodiode. Counter and mca works well with a americium alpha source from a smoke detector and with a old radium loaded clock dial.
For neutron detection I try to use a scintillation counter with the mca. Has anyone tried to use a liquid scintillator with p-therphenyl and some boron compound. It should be easy to use some big volume scintillator for high sensibility

Nice work, Thomas.
I'll be interested in how your efforts with the liquid scintillator go.
The sensitivity of a Photo-diode as a particle detector can be affected by the biasing. What bias, do you use?

Looks like an interesting and original project.
I, for one, cannot read the schematic page in your PDF. It may be a problem with my computer.
In this day, MCAs are unnecessarily expensive products from nuclear electronics manufacturers and it would be nice to homebrew a reliable replacement. Thanks for posting this.

carl, i can't open the files either. of course i'm using a 10 yr old computer... that may be part of it.

Save the PDFs to your desktop, then open....worked for me.

like Jerry told one have to download to open, I don`t know why.
I have used the old 16F84 processor which has nearly no internal ram and only 13 port pins. So I had to use a shiftregister to address an external ram and the adc. It's not a very smart solution. If I would rebuild the device nowadays I would use the same analog circuit but an Atmel processor, maybe ATMEGA32 with internal ram and internal adc.
