Dragonfly Digital Neutron Detector - Updated 2/05/24

Post by Helen Gayo »

This year at HEAS, Joe and I introduced our new, completely digital and turnkey Dragonfly Neutron Detector.

It’s composed of a:
• Charge-Sensitive Preamplifier
• P/Z Correction Stage
• Gain Stage
• Baseline Restore
• Single-Channel Analyzer
• High-Speed Digital Counter
• 0-1200V Ultra-low Noise Power Supply
• USB-C Interface (Software Included)

Since there was so much interest in this system, we have created a mailing list to communicate exciting product launches, with our first announcement coming this week.

Is that the same Nucleon Power Inc of Oak-ridge with the beam on beam neutron source?

Yes. We developed this for a neutron detector array, and decided to offer it as a product. It is now available for sale.

Fantastic, I was talking to Amanda at IAEA-FEC last month, we hope to be able to use your neutron generator for high DPA materials studies.

What detector material does this neutron detector system use?

Nucleon's high-flux system uses fast-neutron scintillation detectors (which require pulse-shape discrimination), but the version that we are offering here is intended to be used with proportional tubes or proton-recoil detectors.

We have additional modules in the Dragonfly series coming that will have more advanced capabilities for neutron and gamma detection.

Ah, so this unit does not include a detector?

Sorry for the confusion, we are offering this in a package with a He-3 tube. We've just sent the information out to the new subscribers.

I am a subscriber. (see Helen's first post in this thread.)

They do offer the 3He tube in the combo package for $1195

I might be wrong but the tube seems to be a 20 ATM tube! I bought one of the tubes from Joe and Helen at HEAS#34 last month. I called LND with the tube number and mine was a 20 ATM 3He tube. I checked the data sheet on line and oddly they do not note the pressure. The call netted me an apology for not putting the pressure sheet in their on line sheet. They sent me a diagram with pressure noted on it. (attached PDF)

Please note that their 1200 volt supply might not work most BF3 tubes nor most larger 3He tubes that demand 1400-1800 volts. Obviously it will work with their supplied tube, as LND notes it works at about 1000v bias. It will most likely work with most any PMT scintillator setup. I only mention this as "Dragonfly" pre-amp was offered separately at HEAS. If it is ever offered up separately, just be aware of the supply limitation as related to any neutron detector you may have.

If you have the coin, this seems like a one stop setup for warranted, reliable neutron counting, and future PMT scintillation projects. What's more, the package comes with software!

From Richard,
" I checked the data sheet on line and oddly they do not note the pressure."

That surprised me. I went to the LND page and sure enough, the useful data sheet has been disappeared. Huh, why? I though surely it must be there but I couldn't find it.

Here is the one I got there in 2016...
LND 25169 He3.pdf
(25.98 KiB) Downloaded 113 times
First data line is, Gas pressure (torr) 15200
and 15200 torr is the same as 20 atm.
Lots of other better details than what is on LND pages now. Sheesh, more creeping internet crapification.

Richard, you knew all this some time back...

Searching the forum for 25169 brings up more posts.

Side note: The 25169 was used as the neutron detector in the
SAIC Exploranium GR-135+ "The Identifier" with the neutron option.
maybe I'll make a separate post on that.

Note as this is more or less a store type post, I have updated the post to keep it alive.
The preamp offered is a really nice bit of neutron system hardware to the person assembling a neutron counting system from scratch.
It is more for those who can't build and assemble a top drawer preamp with the software offered here. I am in no way involved with the seller. I just want this option to stay alive in the for sale forum as long as they offer it.

Helen and Joe...Please let me know if you ever stop offering this so I can delete this offer.
