PEM fuel cell membrane for clean deuterium production?

Post by ab0032 »

I was thinking if it is possible to use a fuel cell membrane to produce very clean deuterium from heavy water for a fusor. If you use electrolysis you have to dry the gas, but from a fuel cell you get over 99.99% clean hydrogen through the proton exchange membrane. Or am I mistaken, does water seep through the membrane too?

Such a membrane can be bought cheaply on ebay, for example from some toy renewable energy construction set or separately.

Now I am wondering, can I use such a membrane to transport deuterium instead of protons too? Any comments or remarks? What do the experts and scientists say, I am very curious.

Here is another link on PEM electrolysis claiming 99.999% gas purity.

And here is someone who has already done it, but not much information otherwise... http://www.radiantmatter.com/content/ne ... g-pem-cell

Hi Alexander.

There's an Edit button so you can extend your original post instead of creating back-to-back messages.

Good idea, PEM fuel cells for D2 generation. You must have had your back turned when

Thanks for presenting some other links.
Why not start with one of the above, and replicate or improve the design?
