Parts for hemisphere fusor

Post by fpg »

I decided some time ago to build a 6" SS hemisphere Fusor. I have already bought the two hemispheres from sharpe products but right now I´m looking for the two bored flanges to connect the hemispheres and 2 full nipple 2.75" flanges. Is there anyone who have any of my requested items for sale? if not can anyone recommend a place (preferably in Europe since I live in Sweden) where I can buy the 8" bored flanges?

I asked a vacuum company how much it would cost if they built the hemisphere chamber for me and they told me that it would cost approximately 10 000$! so i decided that it was way cheaper to build it myself even though I have no experience at all with welding.

I'm a newbie and know little on fusor construction (that's an understatement) but some here use plastic housings for their fusors - you might want to search for that topic here if steel parts/mods are so expensive. Glass chambers should work, too, if thick enough (some here use very clever base plates for the glass chambers for feedthru's-again, search here for the experts on how.)

Fredrik,

Hei, I think you might be the first member from Sweden.

You should check out what the parts cost from K.Lesker, they are world wide suppliers of Vacuum equipment.

http://www.lesker.com/WorldMap.cfm

Start looking for the parts you need on Ebay, these items often come up cheap. You might need to buy your large flanges, but the smaller nipples you might pick up second hand.

You will need to find a local skilled person to do the TIG welding for you, it is important that these welds are done by a skilled person, to avoid problems with leaks.

Go to the Vacuum forum and read all the FAQ posts.

This isn't an option for a regular fusor with a hemispherical enclosure, because the enclosure acts as the anode. Even if it is only for part of the enclosure, it will still likely be exposed to excess bombardment and heat, and will degrade.

Frederik, why not simply buy a piece of plate aluminum and have it machined to the required dimensions to connect the hemispheres? maybe a bit more detail on what your exact requirement are will help get answers for you.

This is my second Fusor that I´m working on right now I have already built a working glass jar demo Fusor. I will make it able to do fusion that´s why I will use the classical and tested SS hemisphere design.

I found my large flanges here( part No: F0800X600N, http://www.lesker.com/newweb/flanges/fl ... m?pgid=8in) but I just want to make sure it´s the correct one so I don´t buy anything that doesn´t fit. I also wonder if I will need to buy some sort of O ring to connect the large flanges?

I made the sketch of my Fusor below in Google sketchup (the text is in swedish but you get the point).

Thanks for your responses

Fredrik,

Not sure about the others on the forum, but I can read Swedish

The type of flange that you have chosen is a CF (Conflat) flange, this type of flange uses a copper ring as a seal, so you need to order a pack of 4-5 extra seals, in case you need to open the fusor again. This is the right type of flange, because it can take a lot of heat.

Your fusor shell can get quite hot when you run the reactor, because electrons will be hitting the inside of the shell.

Just make sure that the diameter is right for your hemispheres.
