If fusion is ever done in a useful, controlled manner, it will be based on a method that none of us can now comprehend. I hope it will not take 130 years. We must await new science.

Fusion may even be cast aside through the discovery of a new dynamic that we can't yet visualize. Maybe Tesla's pie-in-the-sky dream of attaching our wheelwork to the very fabric of the universe will free us from our long held hunter-gatherer status. Such dreams can be held close to our breast for now as we still hunt and gather to stay warm and remain prosperous. We were, are, and will be, hunter gatherers for the foreseeable future. Get used to it and say your prayers at night that the lucky donkey is already born.

Richard, you mentioned something about Tesla. I remember about his Tower that harvest energy from some unknown energy source in atmosphere and through the ionosphere (?) it is wireless transmited through out the Globe. And the same Tower could have been build back then in the begining of the 20th century, but for some reasons it didn't. Let's say that these limitations are gone now, we have the materials and simulation software to test it. Also the "Intel" company demonstrated a wireless energy transmission. So, it is possible. But is there ANY PLAN to build this thing in the next 5-10 years, I mean THE TOWER?

Tesla's tower was a whacked out idea whose time should never come. There was no mystery involved in his tower and it would have worked, (at some level), if only the earth were a pure conductor. He relied on normal science to make the tower do what he wanted it to do. His assumptions, however, as to the realities of the world related to his idea was wrong. Thus, the tower would never have done what he claimed.

His deeper thinking, in his best moments, however, make for interesting points of discussion and hope.

He was a great man in many respects, but his unabashed showmanship and pride would ultimately spoil most of his reputation for genius in later life.

Forget any of Tesla's actual attempted ideas as leading to a solution to any of our energy needs. There is nothing of value in any of them.

I tend to see building of more fission plants as good for us, as it means more involvement with nuclear technology, more trained staff. Otherwise you might end up with no nuclear industry to build our fancy new fusion plants

I can also understand the need to build them now, as we need to keep the lights on, and its a known technology.

I don't think our UK plant is operating at the moment since a little incident some years ago closed it down..

Though considering we just sold most (all?) of our plant to a French company, it might become operational soon, as they have rather a lot of experience with working systems on a bigger scale than us in the UK.

I reckon underground someplace will be most likely the solution, as such spots have survived hundreds of thousands of years.

I also read from time to time how fusion might actually help in some way to deal with some of this waste, so we may well dig it up again after a while!

Richard, how are you so sure that Tesla's Tower wouldn't do what he claims? Have you made experiments on your own?

I have done all the tesla experiments. I personally resurrected the Tesla magnifier transmitter in the US while other amateurs still dallied with standard Tesla coil.

There is nothing at all to Tesla's tower.
