Senior users, Admins and Moderator - help us make repairs

Post by Richard Hull » Tue Dec 03, 2019 6:05 am

We currently have a few newly minted Senior users. They have a number of powers not granted others here. They have been chosen due to their time here, their contributions over that time and an assumed responsible nature to be awarded such titles. They are to not only serve as potent watch dogs, but also to hopefully assist in restoring their older, valuable images that might be lost during the move to Go Daddy. I have been doing this to my older missives and especially the FAQs over the last 3 months and have made a bit of dent in restoring my past work.

Again, if anyone has any of their old images which are no longer there, assemble the images and supply the URL of where they belong. Put them in a post in image du jour along with the URL. I or others will pick them up, put them in the correct old URL and then delete you post in images du jour after repairing your old post.

If you do this, it might be a bit of work on your part, but for us, it will create a flood of work. we are willing to do our bit, Are you?

Over the next few weeks/months, I am going to more actively monitor the site than I have in the recent past, and as I see posts rising in the 'Active Topics' listings that have missing images, I'll reach out to the original post-ers and ask that they help us with the restoration of the disappeared images and files.

I did that last night with Vince Darmancier's "Neptunium Progress" thread though I don't know if he's seen my reply post yet.

More to come.

Thank you all for whatever assist you can lend.

John this list will help. This is every image that is currently missing and a generated link to visit the topic where the image resides. If I have time I may be able to write some more specific SQL to pull lists for individual users so you have a list of your own work. Now that I think of it, perhaps this would be worth the effort as we could see which contributions have gone missing the most and thus know where we need to focus efforts. Perhaps I will have some time this weekend to take a look at that. Until then, here is the master list. Keep in mind, some of these may already be repaired.

I too have repaired many, thus far of my own posts. Many times I have created new, better, and more thoughtful diagrams that were put in the original FAQs back in 2004-2010 time frame. This is good news and better news for the newbies as I got a second chance to make things better that the original. I never re-wrote the FAQ but just supplied newer updated, more plain and understandable diagrams and images. The horror is that many posts with images submitted by so very many of our early superior posters might never be recovered. Hopefully, over time, we might be able to get at all those early images. Amoung the best were those posted of self-designed, superior amps, preamps and spectro amps drawn and given to us by Richard Hester.

We did not have an introduction forum back in 2001. I think I found what would be Richard's first introductory post. If you read it, you can see he was a claiming a very broad background. Somethong he would prove many times over with a schematic of his design that fit perfectly into fusion nuclear measurement systems. here it is.......

Andrew,
Good work on making that spreadsheet list of the missing files.

A couple weeks back I was thinking that something like this was needed or no one could possibly even identify all the missing files by just browsing around. I was going to volunteer to try to help in this task. I wanted to get through some background research on phpBB general workings first - and didn't finish that yet - so I didn't say anything.

I took a pretty close look at your list. I did a sort on column A and learned a lot. I posted about that here:

viewtopic.php?f=47&t=13043#p85119

(and two more posts following that one)

I hope my analysis, presented there, might be of some value.

So this list spreadsheet is very informative. However, while studing some parts of it I did see some info in a few places that doesn't seem quite right. Here are two issues that I see.

1) In column B for the original 'User Filename', if the filename had a space in it the listed filename seems to be truncated at that first space, the rest of the name is not listed.

2) I think only in a few cases, the listed 'Generated Link' points to the wrong post.

Here is one line in your list spreadsheet that happens to have both of these issues. It is line 3557 in that spreadsheet.

Code: Select all

4025_f44d62a76a2a7a8c12c8d112d1c3d723,	Marx	, https://fusor.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12826#p0

User 4025 = Michael Bretti

The generated link points to: "Joe Gayo's lab tour" not something from Michael.

I think the link should be this:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=12859#p83591

Edit: hmm, not to the exact post. Let's try:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=12859&start=10#p83591

and from that post, the full original filename should be:
'Marx Bank Spark Gap Assembly - Final Full Set Resized.jpg'

I would imagine that the truncated filename is quite consistent for any file with a space in its name.

The cause of the bad link, I have no idea about.

Maybe there is a way you can generate a list without these issues.

Here's another brief observation about members who's files have been lost.

To make my list of user IDs with one or more files missing (it's in the other thread), I first (effectively) sorted the list in UserID order. I was then scrolling through the files for one user ID to get to the next one. Without quantifying the number of missing files, two users struck me by the number of files I had to scroll through.

Unsurprisingly, Richard Hull was one. The other was Carl Willis.

As I am headed towards 12,000 postings, I have posted a gang o' pictures. I'll probably never get them all back, but I have made inroads all through the FAQs. Great work Rex! I hope the admins can use and interpret what you are coming up with. It's all geek...er...Greek to me.

Thanks for the thanks, Richard.

Since the FAQs are a priority, one of the things I did with the spreadsheet Andrew provided was to think about the FAQs. I found a way to extract the forum ID for each missing file line in the list and sorted by that. I was then able to cut out all the missing file lines that weren't in FAQs leaving just a list of missing files in the FAQs.

I'm burned out from today's work but I may try to find an accessible way to share that pared down list. As I recall your user ID was on most of them. I also think I looked at some randomly and some were already repaired.

Congrats on improving things while forced to go back and look at all the attachments.

John Futter,

Looking at Andrew's list, I see you with 28 attachment files that are missing. I haven't tried to figure out how many posts that is (there may be more than one attachment in some posts). Hopefully I can get back to you sometime soon with more details.

Certainly for you to do a random search through all your posts would be a painful and likely incomplete task.
