Planet of the humans back up on you tube.

Post by Richard Hull » Sun Jul 26, 2020 1:55 am

I highly recommend this film. Paul Schatskin, AKA th' perfesser, put us onto it in the Covid thread. It was pulled down only a few days later due to a good deal of negativity regarding it and 4 seconds of an interview that was not liked by the person interviewed who disagreed with the films direction. That 4 seconds was deleted and it had to go back up.

I watched it before they pulled it down. They just did not like where it went. Too much honesty recorded. Here is the current link.

The issue you absoultly MUST fold into any calculation of the cost of carbon based fuels is who pays the real price - that is, the Earth warms and vast areas that now support billions of people will turn to useless desert or be too hot to survive without AC. The NYT's is finally taking note of this disaster (far greater than WW II, or anything in our recorded history) and doing a series. Here is an out take that one needs to both understand and realize just how terrible AGW will become for our children. Also, beaware that the dates given are VERY likely too optimistic and will occur more like in the next 30 to 50 years. Already temps predicted for thirty years from now are occuring in many parts of the world (even here on the east coast) now!
According to a pathbreaking recent study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the planet could see a greater temperature increase in the next 50 years than it did in the last 6,000 years combined. By 2070, the kind of extremely hot zones, like in the Sahara, that now cover less than 1 percent of the earth’s land surface could cover nearly a fifth of the land, potentially placing one of every three people alive outside the climate niche where humans have thrived for thousands of years. Many will dig in, suffering through heat, hunger and political chaos, but others will be forced to move on. A 2017 study in Science Advances found that by 2100, temperatures could rise to the point that just going outside for a few hours in some places, including parts of India and Eastern China, “will result in death even for the fittest of humans.”
The cost of wind farms, solar, batteries, nuclear all pale in comparison as to what will now happen cost-wise (this stuff will occur even if we achieve zero CO2 in the next two or three years) but will be even worse (hard to believe but true) if we continue to burn carbon fuels at this rate for even a few more decades. Try to understand that much of India will be uninhabitable in 50 to 70 years. And that is just a small part of the world that is going to experience such extreme temps for a few weeks/yr making the area impossible to live in without active cooling. Even the US will see deadly temps in places like the Mississippi valley. Anyone that thinks current non-carbon energy is too expensive hasn't considered what the real cost is and how billions of people who NEVER contributed to AGW will pay the real price. The death toll will likely be measured in the hundreds of millions. These temperature changes are facts. What will happen - wars, famines, diseases, and number of deaths are unknowns but we do know from past experience, these will be terrible.

One of the major thrusts of the movie, if you listen carefully to the prescient psychologists who are interviewed, is "people".... Far too many of them and no way to humanely get rid on a billion or two. In the struggle for resources and deaths piling up in this grim, well insured future, the burden on all resources will be naturally lessened. If it gets bad enough, however, the natural and fully expected mass deaths due to global climate change could easily trigger a total nuclear exchange worldwide, beating nature to the punch. Either way, suddenly or over an agonizingly long global population die off. The earth will, with the help of man, shrug off a lot of folks. It is important and heartening to remember that no matter when it happens , whatever "it" turns out to be, "it" can't get every last one of us. Humans will survive! We are that kind of being. Nothing like us has ever roamed the earth before.

No 70 mile wide comet or asteroid impacts or a 4 year long continuous solar belch of CME's please.....

Yet had we not been lied to by paid off politicans and the corporations (run by very dishonest CEO's), those innocent billions might very well have survived; we can still do a lot to reduce the total body count (and maybe save our own children/grandchildren from the worse) and prevent nuclear exchanges by ignoring these liars now and going full in on alternate energy sources. Yes, we'll pay more both now and later in economic loss and the wealthy will lose a very small percentage of their wealth but the pay off is huge. While this is the moral thing to do it is also the self interest thing to do.

Still, I agree that population (which is starting to slope towards a level by 2080/90 or so even if AGW didn't occur) is far too large currently to allow everyone to get a decent living standard; however, that too can be addressed given time. And alternate energy sources can both slow pop. growth and reduce total carbon in the atmosphere.

In closed environments, when static equilibrium is exceeded, there are multiple killers. I doubt energy is the one that gets us. Food is often a killer, but humans will figure that one out. Disease is another killer, and I believe it will be the one that corrects or eliminates our population.
.
Regarding energy, I was happy to see the film expose charlatans like Al Gore. He knows exactly what he's doing and it's all about money and ego.
.
Lots of elephants in this film's "room," but there wasn't enough space left for the nuclear pachyderm. Our only carbon free base load generator is being displaced by natural gas. Owned by the petroleum industry, they own state houses wherever there is fracking. People are unwittingly paying a premium for green electricity but are unwilling to do the same for the only true green source. The petroleum industry is too powerful and can wage overwhelming pr campaigns where nuclear vs gas has only one winner.

The media and the money behind it are the master manipulators of our society. When energy is the issue, they are are on it. When race is an issue they are on it. When a virus is the issue they are on it. What the NARRATIVE is though is completely different depending upon which outlet you align yourself to listen.

Nothing makes that more obvious today thank looking objectively at what is going on by looking at various media sources within and outside of the US. The reality is NOTHING like what is being presented by any of the side but rather a small Boolean overlap in the middle of it all. Smart people will see that and see through it. Others will take up sides because of too many years of the media brainwash.

Nuclear has been a bad boy in the past and is dangerous and kills people, or does it. Oh wait, fewer people have died from nuclear power production over its entire life than people die riding bicycles in one year. Still, you could give a lie detector test to the anti nuke people and they would pass saying hundreds of thousands have gotten cancer and died from it. Thanks media and thanks those not savvy enough to NOT believe everything they are being fed on their favorite stations day after day, year after year.

There is no doubt fusion is a money pit, a disaster, a promise never to be realized or kept. Its quest has sustained tens of thousands over the years with no end in sight.
Fission is the energy of the past, present and future and always will be. Renewables are, at best, a feel good joke. They will always be that without the capability of multi-gigawatt storage, improved efficiency, etc.
Coal and natural gas will back up what the renewables can't deliver when it is needed. CO2 levels will never go down, the people of the world just do not care and there is nothing we can do about it anyway. Nothing whatsoever, with rising populations and the third world sweeping past the second world stage to first world status. It takes energy and lots of it. More each and every day. Billions need it, want it and are going to get it, no matter what!

For those who like facts, graphs, charts and data.

The upshot. Selectively choose your data to prove whatever you wish, stir well, distribute widely and change the world.

Not to try and advertise or push anything on anyone but, I felt that here would be a good place to put this plug.

There is a browser extension, sometimes seen advertising on youtube, called ecosia. It uses a large portion of the ad revenue generated by user searches to fund environmental betterment projects, primarily planting trees. It takes an average of 45 searches to fund a single tree. All advertisement/affiliate links are labeled as such and it is a pretty cool project, in my opinion. It probably is too little too late but with how much we humans search the internet, the short term good it provides can make you feel good about yourself as the world goes to doodoo and the inevitably harsh effects of our own doing throttle life out of many beings as the world attempts to right itself.
