High current, low voltage feedthrough?

Post by RobertMendelsohn »

(feel free to move this if it's of sufficient interest to merit a permanent record, since it's not fusion related)

Hello all!

I am building a [vacuum] thermal evaporator, and need to build high current (100-300A) but low voltage (0.5-2V) feedthroughs.
Most fusioneers have all the parts they need to build these devices, minus the aforementioned feedthroughs; does anyone know an easy way to fashion them?

Initial ideas:
  • * 0.25" copper rod through a 0.25" swagelok (what about insulation?)
    * silver braze copper rod through a stainless steel blank
The usual spark plugs don't seem to work due to the current and voltage requirements (i.e. too high of a resistance). Does anyone have a good idea?

Sincerely,

Robert

Conflat versions of high current vacuum feedthroughs can generally be found pretty easily on ebay for about a hundred dollars.

Simplest solution would be just to buy one.

For example : https://www.ebay.com/itm/274808213225?h ... SwtXNgqtZJ

He will consider best offers and the shipping is free.

I bet you could get it for $68-72. Maybe even less.

You can actually get brand new high current feedthroughs for under $100.

For example: https://mpfpi.com/shop/power-feedthroug ... 0049-1-cf/
