Vacuum Valve for Gauge Protection

Post by Jordan Simpson »

As I'm nearing finally being able to test my vacuum pump for the first time, I was wondering if I should have a valve between the gauge the and hose that is attached to the pump while I'm testing it in order to avoid the residual vacuum in the hose (it's a 6" long KF16 hose) sucking in oil and damaging the gauge (which is an MKS 901p Pirani) when I turn it off.

No need for a valve in a test scenario. let the pump run for a while and record the low reading. Turn the pump off and immediately remove the KF fitting. In a finished system it is always good to have a good quality ball valve right at the pump and then the gauge and the rest of the system on the other side away from the valve and pump.
