Such probes are a study in and of themselves along with faraday cups. They are easy to make and assemble but getting good data from them can be tricky. In almost all current writing regarding science and physics it pays to be vague. It looks as if you are so smart you need not quote figures in a number of illustrative examples as in days of yore. Instead, you will be given equations that you can apply. Such equations inevitably have a K in them and in the explanation of the letters and expressions within the equation, k = a constant of system response (to be determined for the specific system understudy.) ???? Get an ancient text on the subject from the 30s or 40s.

The original paper is available at the following link. Langmuir's writing has been pretty easy to follow from what I've read, and this one doesn't look any different.
