Magneto-inertial Fusion (MIF)

This forum is for other possible methods for fusion such as Sonolumenescense, Cold Fusion, CANR/LENR or accelerator fusion. It should contain all theory, discussions and even construction and URLs related to "other than fusor, fusion".

Magneto-inertial Fusion (MIF)

Post by Dan Knapp »

The DOE recently released a report on its "ALPHA" Program where they have been supporting several approaches to MIF as "intermediate density fusion" i.e. density between Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). https://fas.org/irp/agency/dod/jason/fusiondev.pdf
This report may be of interest to the fusor community. Of particular note, the summary figure 4 in the report listing the different approaches to fusion includes the fusor, the Penning trap, and the polywell. It is rare to see a DOE report mention these. Indeed, it has been my experience that a large percentage of the "mainstream" fusion people are not familiar with any of these approaches.

Thank You Dan!!!

If there is ever to be a one stop all inclusive paper that is a must read, it is this one!

This paper gives the history of controlled fusion and its continuing saga of failure to produce real results over the last nearly 70 years. It is an honest and true history with all dreams set aside.

It gives the theoretical and detailed physics at a level understandable by a good, assiduous, high school level amateur physicist.

It is as near a perfect paper for all newbies who would, in a single reading, catch-up on the history, limitations and physics of controlled nuclear fusion. I cannot over emphasize the value of printing out this paper and keeping it on hand after reading every word in it. In short you would have to sift through a lot of posts here and FAQs to get the understanding afforded by reading this paper.

True, it militates for MIF research to be investigated in a deeper manner, but it is constantly reminding the adroit reader that nothing at all in the controlled fusion effort has broken even and also does the great service of a cost analysis of what controlled fusion has facing it before one watt of energy can reach the consumer. This is so important for the rose tinted glasses set.

The term "scientific break-even" is talked of in a most honest manner. It notes that this is a first basic goal that will be a major, genuine milestone, but still leaves commercial fusion power delivery years beyond it.

Dan, you just put a significant paper before all here.

Again, I say, Print it....Read it...understand everything laid out within it and keep your printed copy well highlighted and close at hand for reference.

A lot of pie in the sky newbie questions would be answered if this was required reading here.

Fusion is the energy of the future....and it always will be
The more complex the idea put forward by the poor amateur, the more likely it will never see embodiment
