There's an eBay seller offering Perkin Elmer SiAPDs at $91 each. I really want to move from the big/fragile PMTs to APDs. Does anyone have experience with APD circuits? Let's collaborate on APDs.

Just doing some mental gymnastics on the noise --this would be equivalent to using a PMT without a preamp ie short by a factor of 1000 to 10000 in sensitivity / noise performance.
For nuclear use it is possible to use photopin diodes / avalanche diodes natively ie reversed biased and using the particle to produce a charge cascade in the device. you will also need a very good fast charge sensitive preamp for this
downside is that it only works for reasonably weak energy particles as the silicon has little stopping power --good from 100's of eV to low 10,000s of eV.
Another downside is that the particles permanently damage the junction and leakage rises with damage finally making them useless for spectroscopic work.
Better diodes for this are surface barrier detector diodes but they suffer the same damage mechanism but have much better energy resolution
