Hello:
I never seem to catch a break with Ebay lately.
I just won a Canberra 8076 NIM module.
I just finished reading about how the 8076 was not so user friendly.
What to do?
The unit is in good condition and powers up.
It was owned by LANL...so they probably used it properly.
Any and all info would be appreciated.
Happy Fusoring!

Re: Canberra 8076 NIM module
Larry,
I just bought one on eBay myself. Have you found anything out about this
unit?

Re: Canberra 8076 NIM module
Larry, I do't know anything about the 8076 but the 8075's seem to be the hot item on Ebay . Especially after a recent post on the Yahoo Geiger Counter Enthutist board. Seems a guy there , cpu_nut , wrote a DOS program and an interface board for the 8075 to create a basic MCA. I was going after one of these. But right now everyone else is too. I am waiting to hear if Don Orie has any. Or I just might try to figure out the pinouts on a Nuclear Data ADC-560 I have. Good luck finding any info on these. I already searched my NIM manuals file for you , but no luck.

Gee,
Lotsa' Newbies. You might be talking about my pal Craig Brown. He wrote a complete software package for the 8075. Craig, Bill Kolb ("Living with Radiation" book guy) and I have been pals for years and get together several times each year. Craig is coming down for a visit next weekend to talk shop.
Craig felt the 8076 was not very user friendly, but the 8075 worked swimmingly.
SNAG! You have to build your own 5 chip hardware interface, (pretty easy), but with the 8075, your little interface and his software hooked to your parallel port on your PC, you have a NIM based PHA/MCA.
I put all this up in images du jour about a year and a half ago.
I enclose a dimly lit image of this, my third MCA. It uses a 1.5 X1.5 Bicron PMT and NaI:tl scintillator (on top of Nim Bin). Good for quick work.
A second image shows the computer screen shot after only a 155 second run on a rare piece of Hatchettolite. Too small a scintillator to catch fine upper end detail, but good enough to see Goldie Locks and the three bears telling us that this is "U" rock...... Nice stuff!

Re: Canberra 8076 NIM module
Indeed, I've downloaded Craig's zip'd set of files from the yahoo egroup and
am talking a look at them now. I'm hoping to get enough info on the 8076 to
try to connect it up - any chance it is just a variant of the 8075 where the gain/
offset/etc are controlled through the interface cable rather than with knobs
and dials?
This is of course all assuming the 8076 I'm getting via ebay actually works - a
very big assumption on my part.

Re: Canberra 8076 NIM module
Yes, the 8076 was all under control of software and Craig couldn't get the data needed to decipher how all of that functioned. There were two big multipin connectors on the 8076 whereas there was only that one 26 pin plug on the 8075. Just trying to keep it simple.

Re: Canberra 8076 NIM module
Hi folks:
I just got a data sheet from Don Orrie on this unit.
I now know how this gizmo hooks up to the 40 MCA.
I might be able to fiqure out the pinout from my series 40 field guide now.
The data sheet details the polling procedure and the sequence of operation.
I will post all I get.
Rightly or wrongly!
Happy Fusoring!
