Do PMT's "wear out"?

This area is for discussions involving any fusion related radiation metrology issues. Neutrons are the key signature of fusion, but other radiations are of interest to the amateur fusioneer as well.

Do PMT's "wear out"?

Post by Jon Rosenstiel »

I now have in my possession 3 used pmt's, (Ebay purchase). They are Hamamatsu R1306-02's. The calibration/test sticker on them bears the date of September 1981.

That means they're 20 years old. Are they still likely to be good?

PMT's never wear out. They can readily be damaged if connected to voltage in regular light. Other than this blunder, and assuming they do not develop a vacuum leak, or have elements short out due to rough high G handling, they are just not subject to failure by age or even years of actual use in electrical gear.

Fusion is the energy of the future....and it always will be
The more complex the idea put forward by the poor amateur, the more likely it will never see embodiment
