Ion Gun Fusor

For the design and construction details of ion guns, necessary for more advanced designs and lower vacuums.

Ion Gun Fusor

Post by Mark Rowley »

I am looking for a diagram and detailed description of how an ion gun fusor works. I am mainly concerned with what makes up a basic ion gun and how they are focused to create a poisser. In fact, I am not sure if they ARE focused or it is multi beam convergence.

Mark - my understanding is it was both.. focus and converging beams.

I haven't built an ion gun to test as yet, but the basic idea is to create the ions from electron impact bombardment, and then extract and accelerate the ions Focusing is much the same as for electrons but the lens focusing power is lower since ions are much heavier, so you need different voltages or fields.

Hi Mark:

Sorry it took so long.
I am getting so busy,I am on fire these days.
The info you seek is in the Farnsworth Chronicles
The Farnswoth museum has pics under photos then nuclear fusion then ion gun structures
http://philotfarnsworth.com/
In the intro,I know we have been at this for years but the Vassolattos's intro has vital information on all stages of fusion
developement including the advanced stuff.
Mark 2 & 3 are there.
The patent number is Fusor (patent 3,386,883).
Goto Burt Pooles site on hotstreamer for better pics.
Those units surrounding the sphere are the guns.
Richard Hulls High Energy website has images of the assembled
mark 2,mark 2 variant and the mark 3 devices in the 60's Photos
under nuclear fusion.
The key to any ion gun fusor is the guns themselves.
The fusor mark 3 is a primary example.

This post is great and it is still active.

I used it for a solid year.
It's that good.

Happy Fusoring!
