I got a power supply too...

Post by Jerry Biehler »

Got a Hipotronics R50B 50kv, 5ma supply. Really didnt pay anything for it. It is polarity reversable and about as simple as you can get. In the case is a big sealed oil tank the houses the transformerm multiplier and divider assembly. Swap the two output leads to change polarity. A switch on the panel changes meter polarity. Voltage is controlled with a 4.5amp variac and current is limited with a 300 watt light bulb.

Seems to work good!

One meter needs to be replaced. And then I stupidly broke the glass on the other last night. Doh!

Is that running on mains frequency? I'm not seeing a high frequency driver, or is it hidden behind the box?

I assume so. Everything high voltage is in the tank.

Heres the pdf of the HV Portion.

Idea
Take the glass from the dud meter, and use it for the good one!

The dud meter is a dud because its smashed. No glass.

Hi Jerry,

I have an identical supply that I recently loaned out to another fusioneer. It's been reliable and can be run with the ballast bulb bypassed as long as the load is good. I installed a switch for that purpose on the panel.

I think the major risk with these is blowing the old rectifiers in the sealed 60-Hz supply can. You cannot assume these are particularly robust supplies for that reason.

Good luck.

If it really is a 60hz stack in there, how exactly does that work? My simulations show that at 60hz, getting 10mA out of any stack at 60hz would require massive caps, on the order of 0.1uF for a 2-stage multiplier, and that would be 30kV caps to get 60kV. The numbers just get worse as more stages are added. How is this possible?

Not sure. They may just use a high voltage transformer and rectify and filter it. I have two smaller versions of these, 10kv at 5ma and they are basically identical. Maybe if I ever burn one out I will be able to find out. But by the weight I would say at most there is a doubler in there with the transformer.
