Feedthrough Modification

Post by Brian McDermott »

Is it possible to "soup up" the HV feedthrough so it can take a higher voltage? Is it just a matter of making the ceramic standoff longer and wider on the non-vacuum side by adding more alumina tubing onto it?

Look through the archives and see what a list member did to lengthen the insulator on the atmosphere side using Sylgard 184 silicone resin. I think the post might be in the fusor construction section. search for "Sylgard" and you should find it.

If you are just looking for an additional 10KV-20KV more in the rating of the insulator of your current feedthru, you can always add an insulating cap. Much of the hissing and breakdown really begins at sharp edges on the top connector and can make the entire area around it conductive due to ionization of the air around it. Add a cap of insulating flexible tubing like tygon or rubber (although rubber is quickly attacked by ozone) tubing and you will eliminate much of the hissing and add to your breakover voltage. Use a thin film of high voltage grease or oil between the cap and the insulator for best results.

Those here should study every Farnsworth team image carefully. They used 100kev regularly on the gunned systems.
They used a large sphere atop the fusor HV feed through to distribute and even out the field.

In some cases, like the cave fusor, a large metal can was used and this served on the insulator to have field control at the bottom and as an HV oil reservoir into which the 100kev cable entered and attached to the top to the feedthrough, from above. ( see image of the Meeks mark II prime on my website and the cave fusor of Hirsch also there.)

I like the encapsulation idea. Who actually sells Sylgard 184? All the links given in another post didn't have an easily found listing for the product. Ideas on the price?

Seach the links section for "Sylgard", and you will find at least two places that sell Sylgard 184.
