Diffusion pump flange help

Every fusor and fusion system seems to need a vacuum. This area is for detailed discussion of vacuum systems, materials, gauging, etc. related to fusor or fusion research.

Diffusion pump flange help

Post by daniel_pflug »

So I've always been able to get by with my Edwards dual stage pump...pulls down sub micron, which is good enough for fusor work. I recently purchased a cheap air-cooled diff pump online though and want to implement it so I can achieve higher neutron counts. The problem is, I've no way to hook it up! It's a Daia dpf-3za. There are four bolt holes on both the inlet and exhaust, which made me think it was ASA from the picture, but now with measurements im not too sure.

INtake-- OD=6.25" ID=3.75"
Exhaust-- OD=3.125" ID=~1"

I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow. Just wondering how to hook this up to my conflat chamber and Edwards 8 pump

got it.

part of an old leak detector, using it for parts.

not much time at the moment, but I can pull out the flange some day within two weeks. Al least the diff inlet flange. I probably have the outlet also..somewhere :)

Please post a simple drawing of the inlet and outlet, with inside diameter, outside diameter, viton ring position, hole sizes etc. In mm please, there is a shortage of inches in Europe :)

That way I can check if it really fits when I pull it from the leak detector.

As far as I can see now it is the right size, and it is used on a very old diff pump, there is at least one KF25 on the flange, and some other stuff...

Took a closer look at the leak detector.

See picture.
The flange on top of the diff pump is the correct size, but it is just a reducer to a smaller inner-diameter flange with the same bolts.

From there is connects to a construction with all kinds of gauges (unknown type, the thing in the middle is a magnet), a manual valve, a cylinder, more gauges an pipes etc.
And it's all welded together, there is no way to disconnect them without destroying something, so it's all or nothing. It is possible to disassemble the manual valve, but that will just move you problem from one place to another.

I didn't find anything for the outlet of your pump.

I don't think it's useful to send you the entire (heavy and big) welded construction, making something yourself seems easier to me.

Daniel
I cannot see what the problem is
both flanges on your pump have the o-ring grooves so all that is required is a flat plate with bolt holes to match
a Blank CF or Iso flange would be all you need to adapt with blind tapped holes to pick up your flange pattern. I f you used threaded rod short lengths into the blind tapped holes you would only have to put nuts on to do up the connection.
