Old oil for the turbo

Every fusor and fusion system seems to need a vacuum. This area is for detailed discussion of vacuum systems, materials, gauging, etc. related to fusor or fusion research.

Old oil for the turbo

Post by Artem Artemov »

Turbo oil is very expensive. I need a pfeiffer tl011, it costs $ 300 a litre with delivery. I need 50-100 milliliters.

I found a bottle of oil in my garage. There is no label on the bottle. But I think it's pfeiffer tl011 oil. 1) same bottle 2) color (oil for rotary pumps
colorless ) 3) I measured the density - the same thing. But there is a problem. This oil was bought by the Soviet atomic Institute in ... 1983. This oil is older than me))) can I use it? It can be warmed up or distilled. I have chemical equipment.

It depends, how much is worth risking the bearing in your pump. You can get off-brand versions of the same oil, I would rather do that than risk expensive bearings.

Hi,

I recently ordered 250cc of this oil directly from the company. My understanding is the oil actually expires after a couple years, but that may just be a marketing thing. I would be willing to sell and ship you some as soon as my shipment arrives. Please PM or email me if you're interested.

Turbopumps are so fragile and expensive that I would not dare use an uncertain oil (except oil that's positively identified, but moderately expired).

Ameen, thank you. How much did you buy oil with delivery? Yesterday I found a branch of Pfeiffer not far from home. They have 250 ml of TL011 for $ 80.

Hi Artem,

I got it for about CAD $180 which is a lot more than yours. As in your case, I don't need it all so I'm trying to get it off my hands. You could also try asking your local branch if it is ok to use that old oil if you don't want to spend much money.
