Refresh Copper Gasket

Post by Garrett Young »

I'm short a single fresh copper gasket and of course when I tried to re-use an old gasket there was an unacceptable level of leakage.

As a short term fix could I add lead solder to fill in the grove from the knife edge on both sides?

You could try but any left over rosin is going to outgas like crazy. You can go down to the hardware store and get o-rings and put them in place of the conflat seals. Cheaper in the long run.

Depending on the status of your vacuum system: i.e. not 10^-11 and such....

I had good success by putting a smear of Apiezon M vacuum grease with gloves on old copper O-rings to fill the groove.

Lasted several years and reached < 10^-9 without issues on an ion pump.

Like everything, your mileage (km here) may vary...
