Cheap First-Time Pump

I've been looking around at pump information for a while and seem like I'm getting nowhere. There are so many types and brands and the use of multiple stages etc. What is the cheapest I can go to get fusion going (used is ok)? What type/model should I look into?

Chamber Soldering

It seems like everyone welds, however is there a reason I can't torch solder all the joints to the conflats and nipples? Is the temperature high enough even on the outside edges that it would simply melt the solder joints?

Re: Vacuum Chamber Purchase/Size

<t>Stupid question, but are two grids used or just one? There are two designs in the "simplest fuser" document, one with one and another with two. <br/> <br/> I believe I need to use two grids especially without a spherical vacuum chamber. Are there approximately 1" and 6" identical grids one inside...

Re: Vacuum Chamber Purchase/Size

<t>OK, I'll look into getting one for my first build. If it takes the vacuum low enough, it is possible to fuse in it right? It doesn't have to be a sphere or anything by my understanding.<br/> <br/> Also as a different question, are there any guides for making grids and exactly what shape they need...

Re: Vacuum Chamber Purchase/Size

That is an excellent idea. I see he only got it to 100-200 microns, but doesn't fusion require 10-20 microns? That could just be his setup though, or would it risk implosion any lower?

Re: Vacuum Chamber Purchase/Size

They said it would still be $1100 for a 6"... I was hoping to keep it to around $300 max, is this not realistically possible?

Also 6" inner diameter is enough right?

Vacuum Chamber Purchase/Size

<t>I'm looking at vacuum chambers since this seems to be the hardest part to acquire, and I'm wondering where to get one. I've been looking at vacuum stores online but it seems like spherical steel chambers are upwards of $7000.<br/> <br/> Where can I get one on a budget? Do I have to make one? I do...
