Re: Coronavirus pandemic

This paper on the surface is indeed disturbing, but reading some of the discussion on the medrxiv posting gives some hope that it may not be as bad news as it sounds. Immunology is not one of my strong points, but it sounds like there could still be hope for acquired or vaccine derived immunity.

Re: Coronavirus pandemic

Given that my area (Charleston, SC) has been jockeying over the last week or so with Bahrain for the position of third most rapidly growing infection level in the world, there does not appear to be an end in site any time soon here. Our governor, apparently drawing upon experience from our college y...

Re: Research facility construction

In reference to Richard’s post regarding a separate building for woodworking, I wanted to mention that it is possible to have a woodworking shop and a machine shop coexist with a good dust collection system. My shop is a two car garage space with machine shop on one side and woodworking on the other...

Re: Coronavirus pandemic

The solution to the testing problem is to use pooled testing in the form of monitoring virus RNA levels in sewage. This is being done increasingly across the country and internationally, but it needs to be a nationally coordinated effort. A group at the University of Utah recently demonstrated predi...

Re: Coronavirus pandemic

Am I hearing this correctly? Some are arguing that a for profit company is throwing away money by reusing a booster rocket just so the young people can claim they did better than the old people? Is there no wonder we are regarded as crotchety old farts?

Re: Coronavirus pandemic

Death numbers are problematic also. It is generally accepted that COVID-19 associated deaths are being undercounted. Total deaths are way up over normally expected numbers, with the increase being much greater than the total deaths attributed to COVID. It is going to get even more difficult as case ...

Re: Research facility construction

One other suggestion if you live anywhere near water, be mindful of the floor elevation. A little fill dirt can save much hassle later. When I built my lab building, we hadn’t seen a hurricane in twenty years. I put the foundation slab at grade level, and now I find myself sandbagging every year. An...

Re: Research facility construction

If you decide to condition your space, I highly recommend the Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps. They are super efficient (SEER up to 26 available). You can buy them online precharged with freon for easy installation. Be careful not to oversize the unit; they are so efficient that they don't stay on lo...
