Re: Mark II

Thanks! I was planning on using the capacitor bank for pulsed magnetic field experiments in the fusor. Also its good for powering coil guns and rail guns :)

Mark II

I happened to stumble upon this vacuum chamber the other day on ebay. For only $100 I was able to get a lot of good hardware and a pretty big vacuum chamber with a large six inch flanged base. The guy who I bought it from said it was previously used on a scanning electron microscope. With this new p...

Re: Update: fusor mods and star pics

Thanks Richard! I've began conducted tests at 40 kv and so far the results seem promising. I hope to get my neutron counts up so I can do a decent amount of activation in different materials. I have a NaI(Tl) gamma spectroscopy setup ready to go when the time comes.

Re: Update: fusor mods and star pics

I apologize for the confusion. The 35 mtorr is the displayed pressure, but using the conversion chart that came with my gauge (KJLC 275i), I calculated that the actual pressure was roughly 29.1 mtorr, still fairly high for a fusor. I believe that the need for high pressure goes back to the Paschen c...

Update: fusor mods and star pics

I just completed a series of upgrades to the fusor. I have added thermocouples for monitoring pump temp and chamber temp and have also replaced my faulty ion gauge with a new convectron. I also recently switched to a D2 bottle to supply my gas. My previous PEM setup wouldnt provide me with D2 very l...

Re: Jack and Scott's Fusor-First Light at NJIT

Congrats on first plasma! You guys might want to try using loctite 290 on that TC gauge. I used to have a similar problem with all the NPT fittings on my system until I switched from teflon tape to loctite. I have been using it on my TC and I can consistently pump down to rough pressures of around 1...

best run yet

Today I ran my reactor with the throttle valve opened up a little more than usual. The slightly increased flow rate really made a huge diffence. I also brought the voltage to 35 kv with a run current of around 3-5 ma. After enough fine tuning of the gas system I was able to achieve a kinda sweet spo...

Re: First Fusion for Ryan Catalano

I think I will take that advice and put some insulation around the hv feed in preparation for higher voltages. I bought my D20 on fisher scientific without any licensing or anything (probably because of the 99.8% purity vs the higher 99.999% purities I have typically seen).

First Fusion for Ryan Catalano

Today, April 11th 2015 at 4:05 pm I confirmed neutron generation using a BTI BD-PND (70 bubbles per mrem) My setup consists of a 2.75" CF cross connected to a CF-KF 25 adapter, a 30kV feedthrough, a CF to 1/4" NPT adapter and a 2.75" viewport. The connection to the diffusion pump consists of a KF 25...
