Re: Infrastructure - the joy and end of us all.

If my memory serves, FDR was the one who abandoned the gold standard, and not Nixon.

I would expect that in the event of such a financial catastrophe, things like gasoline and oil would become more valuable than gold.

Re: HV diodes

<t>Be aware that those 20 kV diodes from AE are listed for their maximum nonrepetitve peak current, not the average current. I have some of these diodes, and they really can't handle much more than 10 mA. I have several failed diodes of that type. Those diodes are made by Fuji, and if you are dilige...

Re: Prototype full bridge power supply success

<t>I've made some improvements and changes to my power supply, and I am now well into the 35kV+ operating range. Some additional work needs to be done on the cascade in order to reduce corona losses, and that will be my focus over the next week or two.<br/> <br/> I have found another excellent diode...

Re: Vacuum Gauges

<r>I've gotten some good deals on eBay for thermocouple gauges, but it does require patience and paying close attention to the details so you don't get taken. As far as a circuit goes, Sam's Laser FAQ has a circuit for building your own TC meter. If my memory is correct, there is even a file you can...

Re: Counts vs Events on Eberline NRD

On my ESP-1 with NRD neutron ball, I only have two options for the scaler, either events or mRem/hr. My ESP-1 was shipped with the scaler disabled, and I had to enable it, but that was the only adjustment.

Re: Proper measurement of sub 100KeV photons

<r>While this method won't work for the higher end of the x-ray spectrum, there is some work being done using avalanche photodiodes to measure soft x-rays. The one advantage to this is that the output is proportional, so you can actually plot out an x-ray spectra with an appropriate MCA, although I ...

It took a couple of days for them to contact me, but I made the arrangements yesterday.

Re: Beware of cheap coaxial cables

I have found that coax cables rated for data transmission (like DS-3, STM-1) are a much higher quality than just about anything else out there. The only problem is finding it at a low price.

Re: Neutron detector on eBay

I had contacted this seller about some of his other units, and they were not in as good condition as the one Henry got. Two of the units that were auctioned did not register any background counts, but the seller was upfront with the information.

Re: Neutron Detection by W.D. Allen

<t>I received my copy of this book today. I found one through Abebooks from a place in Germany. After shipping, etc, it came to 45 euros or at the time something like 55 USD. It did take 6 weeks to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. I've read through it once, but this is one of those books that...
