What about "Liquid Scintillation vs. Pancake GM"?

This area is for discussions involving any fusion related radiation metrology issues. Neutrons are the key signature of fusion, but other radiations are of interest to the amateur fusioneer as well.

Hi
What happened with this promising thread?
Nobody continued that approach?

Liquid scintillation is very rare in the amateur community. Most scintillation work tends to be gamma related, although liquid scintillators tend to have a full sphere counting ability. For really weak sources, this is just perfect, provided you have little issue with dipping the radioactive source in the liquid. The near equivalent for beta detection is flowing gas proportional systems; equally rare among amateurs.

If someone actually does work in these areas, we are glad to hear about their efforts. Liquid scintillation fluids are hard to obtain and relatively expensive from the major sellers. A lucky surplus buy on 16 oz. of the "good stuff" would be nice.

I don't think there is a competition between liquid scintillators and pancake GM use. It really depends on what you need to measure and in what situation you find yourself.

Hi Richard
I was recalling George Schmermund' experiments posted some years ago.
Nobody followed that line?
I understand it's not the easiest way but was curious.

Perhaps the actual links make it more clear:

I actually bought the little corrigator tool listed and shown in the Dec 6 posting back then. I have used it several times in other work. However, I just never got around to working with the scintillation system George noted. Sometimes stuff that seems cool just gets dropped in the push through life.
For me liquid scintillation efforts seemed to be one of them. Apparently, no one else picked up the effort to any report worthy degree, either.

Great re-reference URLs, Rex. There was a lot of posting on this with a lot of great ideas.

Thanks Rex and Richard,

Yes, may be a cumbersome approach.
