making thoriated tungsten filaments

Every fusor and fusion system seems to need a vacuum. This area is for detailed discussion of vacuum systems, materials, gauging, etc. related to fusor or fusion research.

making thoriated tungsten filaments

Post by Jeroen Vriesman »

First step towards carburasation of thoriated tungsten filaments is making the filament.

We started with a mold of graphite, in which we put two Ti-5Al-2.5Sn wires and some lead-glass powder.
We heated the graphite with an induction heater, the coil is air-cooled with a compressor.

Next, we spot-welded the thoriated tungsten wires to the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn wires.
